Hi Derryn congratulations on your recent transplant. I too am a liver transplant recipient. I am a songwriter/musician and played bass with Australian band Air Supply. I received my transplant in 1998 and I’ am doing very well. I recently released 2 new albums and am living life to the full so have no fear my friend you will live a wonderful life. I am writing to you in the hope that yo will have a listen to a song I wrote to help promote organ donor awareness. “When Angels Call”. This song has received over 8000 hits so far on my space. i hope you can find time to have a listen and that it moves you like it has already moved so many, hopefully to become organ donors. Please copy and paste this link to your web browser. http://au.myspace.com/organdonorsong
You can find more info on me should you be interested at the you tube website I have entered with this mail. Thank you and kind regards

G’day Derryn, First up congrats on the positive response you have awoken people to in regards to liver donation and transplant. Now my totally selfish reasoning I’m where you were at around 15 months ago, awaiting the pkysical and psychological testing to see if I’ll be put on the transplant list. So can you get back typing with the updates as reading and learning what to expect written in lay language is an absolute blessing and help. Hope all is well and take care. Grant

    Hi Derryn,
Really hope all is going well for you. I’m basically at the stage where cirrhosis and now an increasing lesion is making things not look real flash. I find out Monday if I’m going onto the transplant waiting list and at 48 don’t reckon the pine box and I want to meet each other just yet. Am looking forward to you adding more to the diary as it is appreciated to be able to read in human terms what the journey entails. Hope all is travelling well for you and I really look forward to your future writing. From us that know what you’re going through thank you and good luck

    Dear Derryn

I think of you often and hope that you are going well. It’s probably turned out for the best in that you have been forced to rest.

It must be very difficult to be confined, even in the nicest place, for a long period of time. Just imagine when you can go out when you please – things will look so wonderful …. I hope it will make up for what you are enduring now.

You don’t know me – I am a long-time fan of yours Derryn. It seems you will be out by Christmas – not too long to wait now.

Love and Best Wishes and Many Thanks for all you have shard of yourself with us.

    Hi Derryn,
Still missing you on radio (as I am sure you are missing your work). I heard today that you have been back in the hospital, and that everything is progressing well. Great news! I’m sure you’re pounding the keyboard and keeping abreast of the world and its foibles. Can’t wait for you to be back on air, keeping the fools of the world on their toes.
    Regards and best wishes,
    Rhonda.

    Hi Derryn,

Hope your recovery is going well and that you are not too bored. You could listen to the radio but this week it’s a bit ho hum, only saving grace, Tom Elliot. Have given Mac & Myer a go in the mornings but sadly it’s a bit pedestrian, fortunately the producer is there to keep apologizing for his sidekicks gaffs, oh dear! I haven’t mentioned any names as I don’t want to run the risk of home detention :) Hang in there Derryn

    Hey Derryn,

Hope your recovery is going well. I’m still on chemo myself and some days I can’t stop crapping, I mean physically. A pain in the freckle, but not unusual given both my major operations. With you being on house detention I don’t even know whether you get our emails, even so just in case you do I thought I would tell you the brand of Commercial medication MD fraction mushroom extract I was on. Yukiguni which is only available in Japan, we got ours through a connection there. The company owns the patient and Dr Nanba gets supplies of it and boosts its levels to make it stronger to help people. I was lucky enough to be privy to some of that. Since I’ve been of the better gear and on the Chinese stuff my blood levels for chemo have not been as good as the first time. This stuff ain’t a miracle cure, but it does enhance Western Medicine. The Yanks have only just started to do clinical trials on this and the results have been good. It takes ten years and millions of dollars to do proper controlled clinical studies on any thing like this though. I’m only a case study of one, but what would I know, I’m just a dopey Motor Trimmer.

    Yours Sincerely

    Hey Derryn,

Everyone, hopes that you are recovering well. I recall my times on the eighth floor at the Austin and look back with great admiration to the crew who have helped me through. They are just fantastic!.

I think its important to rest properly after any major operation, maybe the courts did you a favour?. You take your pet to the vet for an operation the first thing they do when they get home is find a quiet spot and lay low. Not such a bad idea.

Five tumors were found to have metastasis to my liver after I had a colon resection last December and the Oncologist informed me of a prognosis that seemed rather average. (I mean pretty bloody frightening!) My wife of whom is intellectually brilliant and is a pharmacy student got angry and started searching for solutions. She found a Molecular Biologist in Japan who’s wife has been fighting cancer and they have both been researching mushroom technology mainly through Professor Nanba’s 40 years of research. He is the Dean of Pharmacy in one of the Japan’s Major University’s. I was actually privy to some of this guys mushroom extract drug. My first Pet scan revealed five tumors, my second pet scan, after six cycles of folfox chemo and this mushroom extract gear revealed the largest tumor had reduced to half the size with three tumors having disappeared and another almost gone.(I have the Pet scan discs). By the time they ended up doing my liver resection they couldn’t find any micro metastasis in the biopsy. I am now on chemo as well as this gear to be sure. Now the Oncologist tells me I now have a good prognosis and whatever I have been doing keep doing.

The use of conventional western medicine with eastern medicine is a very grey area indeed as some of this stuff teamed together with chemo can block chemo from working rather than enhance it. Problem is it takes huge amounts of money to do proper controlled research on this sort of thing. I believe that America is just starting to do some on this gear. Japan have been using one of these mushroom technology’s as a part of its chemo since the nineteen eighties. Anyway I’m probably starting to waffle on too much.

    Best of luck Derryn,

    Kind regards

    Dear Derryn

The treatment dished out to you by the courts for standing up for your community should not be forgiven.

When it comes to casting a vote at the next state election, your treatment should also not be forgotten. For who among them has a conscience?

Many years ago, I drove around with a yellow ribbon tied to my radio aerial in protest at your incarceration over a similar issue.

Trusting that you feel better every day and I look forward to hearing you back on radio soon.

    Best wishes

Hey Derryn.Great news about the liver transplant. You are an inspiration to many.I have just registered to be a doner all because of the attention you have placed on the importance of having doners registered. My family are aware of my wishes. Thank you for being the voice and making people listen. This is only one of many things that you my good man have spoken about and enlightened people here in Victoria and also Australia. Keep going mate cause your one of a kind

    Hi Mate
I been so encouraged by your battle to survive this ordeal, i do pray for you and trust you will have many a good year ahead.
I to have somthing thats attacking my liver its been happening for many years now, already had the left lobe removed some years ago but they are keeping a eye on me. But despite all of that, God is still here. He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. Even in the darkest times of our lives, we can learn to trust God because He is always there. Sometimes when we go through weeks, months or even years of feeling like we can’t get close to
God, its like we are in a desert……..that can be the making of us. And i think in resent times Derryn you have recieved more than a new liver, there seems to be a tenderness that can only seem to come through these life threatening times. Any ways mate ill stop going on now,i will continue to hold you up to Jesus. All the best for us both, and for others like us.

Well done Derryn, Keep taking the meds on time and keeping well. Its very very important…..Keep away from persons with colds, flu’s, etc…

Bob Jones was one of the team when I gave my kidney to my baby daughter 16 years ago…she now needs another, so we will be on that waiting list soon..

Thankyou for telling your TX story. I hope it helps Australia know how important organ donation is, and how it helps those in need get a new lease on life.

Keep well, and hope you have a wonderful new life.. Wendy

hi derryn. i am currently awaiting a liver transplant and was so relieved to hear of your recovery. people out there are so quick to pass judgement on something they no anything about. you and i both know the amount of tests injentions scans etc. we have to endure. its not like just taking a no. and waiting tillyours is called. i am frightened, but i have faith in my higher power and i am a strong person,i willget there. i hope you have a speedy and good recovery. lynne xx

    Hi Derryn,
Sadly, you knew your courageous actions would have repercussions, but use this ‘time out’ to get well so that you can come back fighting fit. As ludicrous as the sentence is with regard to use of media, etc., it may take some pressure off your work-a-holic personality, so that you have time to heal from your recent transplant. A time of reflection, peace and pride. Won’t Christmas be wonderful this year?!
    Best wishes and grateful thanks,
    Rhonda. X

    Hi Derryn

Glad to hear you are doing well and I suppose have now got enforced rest! Not fair..

I’m a PSC person (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) and at the moment doing well although I know the only cure is a liver transplant. I feel while I am still well I want to make awareness of the disease and organ donation. I’m in Perth and have so far only come across a few other PSCers, My plan at the moment is with an organisation in America called PSC Partners Seeking A Cure ( Australia is not doing anything!) to send a fluffy toy liver around the world to fellow PScers who I’ve met at the American conference, to take photos then I’ll make a calendar. The first Australian stop after Perth will be to a young 12 year old Bek who is in Melbourne waiting for a liver. The Liver is going to go no matter what , but it would be great if more people knew about it so we can get the organ donation message out. If you know of anyone interested please pass my email details on, I seem to have hit a few closed doors ! Have you ever read the poem Invictus ? Great last two lines.
    Stay healthy
    Regards
    Corinne

I’ve just heard the news about the court’s decision for Derryn to serve a sentence of five months home detention! What a load of garbage!!

And not being able to do his radio show etc….absolutely disgraceful behaviour…on behalf of our court system! The court system and the judge who set this sentence should be ashamed! I’m so angry!

Good on you, Derryn! You’ve done nothing wrong! I would’ve done similar in your shoes! Take the time to rest up and get well. You have many, many supporters!

Wonderful to see your recovery – and all that you have done for organ donation – hoping and praying that it will pay off personally soon!

A friend in Perth has an idea to help raise awareness of organ donation and a rare liver disease PSC. She has had made a fluffy to – a “Superliver” (she’s planning on making a few more) and is going to send them around the world having people with PSC take photos of themselves with Superliver. She’s going to make some calls etc to see if she can get Donate Life Australia on board, as well as some media coverage, but i figured a mention here couldn’t hurt!

Superliver is a product of the PSC Partners – in the medical world PSC stands for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis – a progressive liver disease that causes cirrhosis – we prefer to think of PSC as “Power, Strength, Courage”.

The reason my friend has asked me to help her in this is that my 12 year old daughter is currently waiting for a transplant, under “Dr Bob” of course, for the treatment of PSC and it’s complications.

Again, wonderful to see your recovery.

    Blessings,
    Kerrie

    Derryn,

It sure is unreal and mind boggling even after 21 years of ‘new’ life with another person’s liver in me. At times it was sureal, other times feeling uneasy about being alive. But since medicos have spent so much time and effort I swore to look after the liver and my health to justify the dedication and atention they put in.
My road to ‘normal’ living has not been smooth, I had and have my ups and downs with other issues related, I think, to the medications and may be my own body functions or even genes, but overall it has been good.

Medicos told me then that the 1st and 2nd years are critical and after that there is another lifetime to go. Heed their advice and do not get too cocky for your body will react in unexpected ways.

Welcome to the world of transpantees.

    Take care.
    Michael

I am really glad that Derryn Hinch managed to get a liver in time.

I think the fact they he was a recipient of a donated liver, will not only impact on his life beyond words, but the lives of many others, as the donating of organs increase, from the rise in awareness,

What can I say? I really admire the man.

    Warmest regards,

    Hi Derryn,

What wonderful news, you have a new liver. I was overjoyed when I heard the news, as I am sure you were. If ever there was a person deserving of a transplant, it is a person who can stand up and be our voice on matters we have little control over. Take it easy and recover slowly (reads: do as the doctors tell you!).

And to the donor family, so hard and so rewarding. What a special gift they have given. They are in my prayers.

Your journey gives my husband and myself encouragement to continue the stem cell debate. He has young onset Parkinson’s disease, diagnosed at age 44, has had deep brain stimulation, is on maximum medical therapy, and our research is now concentrated on finding a clinic somewhere in the world which will perform stem cell therapy. We remain optimistic and ever hopeful there will be a cure in his lifetime.

    Regards,
    Lizzie

Derryn, enjoy your new liver and your new life.
    Regards, Lizzie

    Dear Derryn,

I am writing to you to wish you well after your recent transplant operation. I am a research scientist who works in the field of immunology, with a particular interest in HLA (or MHC) as it relates to both transplant immunology and autoimmunity. I lecture to undergraduate students at all levels on the state of the art in transplantation, and the holy grail of stem cells for this use, in the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Since you have been personally touched by advances in the field of immunology I thought I might share a story with you.

Fifty years ago in September 1961 a young Australian PhD student name Jacques Miller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Miller) discovered the function of the thymus; he is the only living person to be able to make such a monumental claim! Despite the enormity of his discovery, amazingly he has never been acknowledged with the Nobel Prize. Jacques is considered by Immunologists to be the modern father of Immunology, and his discovery underpins our current understanding of the fields of transplantation, vaccination, autoimmunity and viral immunity. In discovering the function of the thymus he discovered the cells that mature there and they are now so named ‘T’ , for thymus-derived, cells.

On 26th August, at the Melbourne Town Hall, The Department of Immunology at Monash University is holding an art exhibition at which a portrait “JAQ” by Jill will be auctioned to raise awareness and funds to support Immunological research at Monash. We are shortly to send out invitations to this event and would very much value your support in helping us to raise awareness of the event in Melbourne. The Master of Ceremonies is to be Dr Norman Swan and the opening address will be given by Nobel Laureate Peter Doherty. Of course if you are well enough by then it would be wonderful if you and Chanel would join us to acknowledge this monumental discovery by Jacques…and perhaps contribute to the bidding for Jill Steenhuis’ portrait of Jacques.

With kind regards for a speedy recovery.

    Dear Derryn

The very best of good health to you now that you have had the liver transplant. I have admired you and your good work to protect others for many, many years.

I was at that rally where you and all of us named the repeat sex offenders, that was the only rally I’ve ever attended.

God bless the family and the poor sole who has died and given his liver.

All this has happened for a reason that you should live on for many years to continue your good work. As you see I do believe in God and think God has saved you to do his good works.

Good luck to you for a speedy recovery. These days, I wish I could hear more of you but only finish work and can turn on the radio for the last 20 minutes of your show, unless I’m on holiday.

    Best wishes, Jenny.

    Dear Derryn
Get well, keep well, we need you, and yes the doctors work miracles.
We need you and I await the time when a paedophile moves next door to a judge’s house, possibly when his grandchildren are visiting.

God bless the donors of your new liver.

We donated my father’s corneas about three hours after he died suddenly. The doctors rang us at home and asked us over the phone. We immediately said yes, in a heartbeat. A young man was about to have his eyes superglued shut because his corneas had burst. We said yes and are glad we did, but would have loved to have been told if the man was subsequently able to see. Being mad fitzroy supporters then, as my dad hated Collingwood, we were laughing at Dad’s wake because if his corneas had been given to a Collingwood or Carlton supporter we would have heard the corneas yelling while watching footy, “Get us out of here, we dont want to watch this” especially if Fitzroy were copping a hiding.
You may remember me. Years ago I wrote to you about young people running away from perfectly good homes and living in the streets to get Centrelink. Still happening, sadly. My son did, as you know. Years later he woke up but not before many disasters befell him.

All the best for your recovery. You are so fortunate to have been blessed with a second chance at life with a new liver. Thoughts and prayers are with you, the donor, their family and those that have not been so lucky. Take care, and keep the airwaves buzzing…

Derryn, I cried when I heard the news this morning. I can’t imagine what this means to you and your family. I wish you a speedy and successful recovery – good things happen to good people.
I do know that your battle made me an organ donor some months ago – and yes, I’ve fully discussed it with my family – I threatened to come back and haunt them if they don’t go through with it.
You will never fully know the impact you make on people. All the best

    Dear Derryn,

When waking this morning to the news that you have finally received a liver transplant I was so pleased for you!!!

I do hope you are recovering well and you have a better quality of life ahead of you. Derryn, you have so much to offer this world…!

My daughter who is 21 years is in the process of a “work up” for a liver transplant and noted this morning that Dr Starkey was one of your specialist, he is also looking after my daughter.

I will be listening out about your recovery with interest.

As a wise person has said on many occassions.

    “That’s life!”

    Kind Regards,

Also thankyou to the generous family who facilitated this in their time of grief.
I daresay you will be absent from work this afternoon, just joking.BUT, then again, knowing you, almost anything is possible.

Derryn, Just heard the news about your transplant! This news came just minutes after a dear friend told me that her husband’s father had passed away yesterday. It really makes you stop and think, doesn’t it? Life is so hard at times, and through the generosity of a grieving family, you will have another chance of life. I am so grateful for the bravery of organ donor families, and very pleased that you became a recipient. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Looking forward to hearing you, ‘stirring up trouble’ again soon on 3AW. Kind regards, Rhonda. X

    Hi Derryn

Just heard on the 3AW breakfast show that you’re currently undergoing the transplant surgery! Sensational news and I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.

I listen to your program every day on my way home from work at HMAS CERBERUS. By the way my husband & I went for a coach tour through Europe a few years ago and your Auntie was there with her friend. Small world!

Derryn I just heard that you have been rushed into hospital overnight for your liver transplant.

I am so happy for you that it bought a tear to my eye.

I hope all goes well and that you come back to us with a new life ahead of you.

We need you here, not in heaven!! Keep up your good work.

    Hi Derryn,
My brother Wayne from NSW who you talked to about 5 weeks ago, had his liver transplant overnight. He was called in yesterday morning with a 50/50 chance of having the op. Like you his first call in was a false alarm. It was a very long procedure but it all went well. At this time he is still waking up but I know he would want you to know that he had his transplant.
There is still a long way to go but hopefully this is a start to a new life for him. Wishing you all the best too.

    Hi Derryn,

I am absolutely outraged regarding your court case. Why don’t these people spend the time, money and effort into catching real criminals? I get that a law has been broken. You were not the only one who shouted the names of those despicable beings, I can’t even call them human. Animals behave better. But come on, enough is enough.
Wishing you all the best Derryn and hope you get that transplant real soon.
    Lots of love.

    Hi Derryn
I have just read your book “I beat the booze and you can too”. I am starting my four week diary today and know I will be successful. You have inspired me to take action and I thank you for that.
Good luck with everything. I do hope you get your transplant and it is successful.
    Thank you for helping me

I see from your writing that you are on holidays, Derryn. Hope you find some happy local things to do.

I can’t imagine being in the situation you’re in – that is, maybe you’ve got a couple of months to live, maybe more. You’re doing very well to tolerate being on the edge of life and death with apparent grace. It’s actually a kind of spiritual exercise of being present.

Just wanted you to know I was thinking of you….
    Love, Eve

  83. Katie Kircher
    83

Derryn, thanks so much for sharing the truth about your situation. I agree with other commentators here. For you to face prison time for protecting children, while also facing the uncertainty of waiting for a transplant that might not come, is just insane.

Next time someone suggests buying a liver in Bangkok, remember my little story. I had surgery in Bangkok. Things started going wrong shortly after the anaesthetist started pumping whatever-it-was into my veins. As the chemical travelled, this awful cold ache accompanied it. The pain was so bad I doubted I would lose consciousness before the surgeon started. (Having lived there for four years, I also remembered one of my staff telling me a horror story about remaining conscious but paralysed during surgery)…

I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I was in the ICU in the most indescribable pain. I lay there watching the clock on the wall for three days. I remember every second of those three days. I asked for painkillers. What they gave me did not do the job. Silly me, I should have known: this was Bangkok. All the good drugs (ie opiates: morphine, pethedine, codeine) were banned even in hospitals.

My job at the time (in the Australian Embassy) included regular visits to Australians in jail, most of them for drug trafficking. When I had recovered from surgery (it took 6 weeks!!) I went back to visit the Aussies in jail and told them about the nightmare of trying to recover from major surgery with inadequate pain control. Let’s rephrase that: no pain control.

One of the prisoners said, “You should have told us!! You just have to go to (he named a hotel) and ask for (he named the person). He would have given you something that worked.”

I didn’t think diplomatic immunity would have protected me if I had made the mistake of taking the prisoners’ advice. I guess they meant well.

Next time someone offers you a cheap liver in Thailand (or, because of similar laws, Malaysia or Singapore), just tell them they don’t have effective painkillers after surgery. Since you have also given up drinking, you’d have to resort to biting down on a rusty two baht coin if they still have them.

Another point: Bangkok is more than 45 minutes from the Alfred.

    Dear Derryn,
I want you to know that as a live organ donor who donated a kidney to my twin sister over 30 years ago, and an ambassador for DonateLife (Vic.), I am out there giving talks, writing letters and ‘doing media’ to raise awareness of the urgent need of organs.
In my time I have met many liver recipients, ranging in age from 3 up to 70. May you soon join their ranks.
I think it’s outrageous they could even be contemplating putting you in gaol, at this time especially.
Please let me know if I can do anything specific to help you in my work on organ donation. You may like to have a look at some of the exposure from the past, such as ABC “Overnights” It may trigger some ideas.
My wish for you is simple: may you receive that call imminently and be saved through the miracle of transplantation.
    Warmly, Janine Joseph

Hi Derryn, I’m so sorry to hear what you are going through not just with the cancer but with your court case. Without people like you around, many parents would be unaware of the sicko’s around us that are sex offenders and pedophiles. You should be applauded for this, not punished. I do hope the case goes well for you so you can focus all your efforts on getting well. Good luck with everything.

    Hi Derryn,

My dear husband, John, passed away on the 27th May, 2011 waiting for a liver transplant. He did not have liver cancer, but Hep C & ESLD.

I wish you could join me in advocating, not only for more donors, but more avenues to retrieve organs. How can so many people die, wish to donate their organs, yet they can only be retrieved from ICU. Surely with medical science, they could research some other ways??

I wish you all the best for your journey Derryn, and hope that you are in receipt of a transplant very soon. Wishing you good health, and a good life…

I hope you are doing well today sweetheart. I just wanted to say that I have been watching you on TV since I was a kid and admire your courage and your willingness to speak up no matter what the consequences.I wish that there was more people in the world like you. Most people feel defeated by beaurocracy and all its superficial, unjust crap. It’s in plague proportions in any workplace and any level of society. I hope to be more like you when it comes to standing up for what is right and just. That is without a doubt a precarious place to be no matter how well you play your cards.Sometimes you can only brave the circumstances as you are doing now. Dear Darryn,
You don’t know me but I am an admirer of yours. I watched your programs on tele and did not hold back but told it how it was.
I was concerned to hear that you have cancer and as such has prompted me to write to you. Cancer is in our family as well and we are using a product called X2O. While this product is not a cure for cancer, it alkalises and hydrates the body. Cancer can not live in a Alkaline Oxygen rich enviroment. X2O is a natural product and only supplies what the body needs for optimal health.
While I have no medical qualifications I do have contacts who do. I have a ten page folder on the product if you would like more infomation.

    Dear Derryn

Pleased to hear things are not quite so grim.

I am in a similar position to you – was on liver transplant list but a discovery of bowel cancer (routine test as part of ongoing preparations and test for transplant) on Dec 24 changed that. Stage 3 cancer means I am off the list until I am cancer free for 5 years ( a v hard ask for someone already on transplant list!) and have had my bowel removed. Cannot have chemo due to potential damage to an already fragile liver. My treatment options are to be happy ( which I am), not stressed( so have been forced to give up my beloved work) and to lead a healthy lifestyle. So far so good, 4 months into recovery period and I remain very confident.

Keep smiling and pleasevcontinue your advocacy for organ donation.

    With very best wishes

    Hello Derryn,

I hope the next call at 11:00 pm proves to be the right liver and the right match for you!

I am living with stage IV colon cancer (spread to the liver, lungs, and spine) and know what it is like to hear that you have only months to complete a lifetime of dreams. Research and developing treatment options like RFA, SIR-Spheres, and new chemotherapy agents have kept me in the fight. You, too, are truly showing so many other survivors that treatment stepping stones can buy valuable time while journeying to the next step.

Good luck….and praying that you are soon enjoying life with a new liver!

Derryn, this is a note of support. You show remarkable courage in the “name and shame” approach you have shown over the years. That you should be sentenced to a jail term for your action just shows that the court system seem to offer too much protection to those who abuse our society.
Good luch with your operation and keep up the fight.

    Good afternoon Mr Hinch,
It was really sad to have heard you only have a few months to live who ever has told you this is an idiot. They told my friend that he was dieing and only had 3 weeks to live from liver cancer the told my god mother she would not see christmas due brain cancer, in 20 days it has shrunk to the size of a 5cent coin, i have a very special gift i want to share with you i want to save your life in just 40 days, Please do not think i am full of it, thats what i do for a living i show the doctors how wrong they are, i just saved a lady from a kidney transplant in 40 day she walked out of the hospital and her doctor said in the 33 years of being a doctor at free masons’s this was his 3rd miracle, I want you to be the next miracle. Please let me show you how easy it is to live sir.My specialty is cancer,Please take my hand, you do not have long the doctors will kill you first,

Good Luck Mr Hinch, My father-in-law has secondary liver cancer and is having a hard time of it lately. Mum hasn’t had a cry yet and speaking to them is tough as you have shown. I know you probably can’t tell everyone who asks, exactly how you feel from time to time, but there are heaps of us out here who greatly appreciate your ability to put words to your thoughts, trying to get behind all the questions that a lot of people think of, but cannot express.

Thankyou for your conversations to all who find your spot and I hope the next call is for real.

When Zaidee was taken in for her final operation to be an organ and tissue donor,
She did not need her bright blue eyes to see,
    Her lungs to breath,
Her little heart to pump blood around her tiny body,
Nor did she need her kidneys or liver again.

    You see, she had died.

All Zaidee needed to take to heaven was the love from her Mum, Dad and brother Jaz.

But other little children just down the hall in the same hospital did need her heart and her liver to live life again.

Two little kids got to see their Mums and Dads face properly again when they each received one of Zaidee’s corneas.

A mother of a young child received both of Zaidee’s Kidneys.

A newborn and an infant got Zaidee heart valve and another a heart patch both got a second chance at life from parts of Zaidee’s.

These kids are now home with their mums and dads, brothers, sisters and friends again.

What Zaidee gave in death, was life to other children and a mother, because we as a family discussed donation years before, just in case.

Our little girl Zaidee gave the greatest gift of all – her organs and tissues. She is now our angel in heaven who we are so very proud of what she achieved in her short 7 years and 22 days of life.

    She gave life to others.
Her spirit and her memory will live on and on.

    By: Zaidee’s Dad.

Dear Derryn, Two shows that I watched on TV over the weekend, featured ‘your song’ That’s Life and the words, “You’re riding high in April,Shot down in May”, seemed so poignant. I do believe that you are gonna change that tune and that you will be back on top in June. You have been part of my life throughout a miriad of challenges and changing waters for eons. I have laughed with you and cried for you. I believe in Karma and all that you have given and all that you have done will come back to you many times over at the time you need it most. Your tenacity, your ethics, your beautiful big heart and inner strength is your greatest weapon against all and will be back on top in June and tops on my list of my most admired people. Thank you for what you have been and given to me via the ‘waves’. Christina

    Dear Derryn,
Thank you for using your voice to tell so many of the plight and the tough times spent on a waiting list for an organ donor.
While I pray that your journey gives you back the life you are fighting hard to hold onto, even more I pray and know that your journey can be called a success if you have raised the awareness and more people donate – a success story that will be even greater than one life saved, but many lives.
Of course, my hope is that my 12 year old daughter will be one of them saved. After a lifetime of chronic illness, with the last few years seeing multiple hospitalisations including major surgery, and now awaiting a liver she continues to hold her head high in the stormy waters of the transplant wait, allowing her family, friends and faith to lift her up when she feels she is sinking.
Best wishes for your journey, and may you too have many around you helping hold you up.

would a partial transplant help..I had an uncle who died recently way too young and I offered a partial but it was too late for him. I offered some hospitals

    Life’s events don’t always happen,
    Just as they are planned.
For you this is a trying time,
    I fully understand.
    Moments like the present,
    Tend to upset and confuse,
I’ll try to give you my support,
    In any path you choose.
I’ll listen always with my heart,
I’ll do what I can do,
I’ll hope for brighter things to come.
    My thoughts remain with you.
    You know your situation.
    You’re alert to life’s demands;
But don’t forget I am here.
    I’m one who understands!

Hello Derryn from Jenny, Luke, Diana (15) and Henry (13).We are all crossing our fingers for a donor liver that is a great match. Luke has liver metastasis of colorectal cancer and we get our nuclear medicine scans results next week. These indicate whether potentially curative surgery is possible. The wait is not much fun. I suspect we understand how you might feel in this regard.

We wish that legal matters were not erupting right now for you. This is a situation in which the law an natural justice seem to be at odds. Most people are aware of the stress and illness link, and our family hopes you find unshakeable peace of mind in seeing the vast numbers of people from every walk of life who are supporting you. Good people, Derryn. My children are grateful to you for making the world a safer place to grow up in, and doing so during the worst possible time for you.

    Best wishes from our family

    Hi Derryn,

Id like to congratulate you, for taking action against what you believe in regarding pedophile’s. I also beleive that these people that harm innocent children do not deserve to be hidden from us.We deserve to know if a potential predator against our children is living in our street. Children should be protected, & more of us should also start to stand up and say what is truly right & wrong. And i say they lose there right’s for protection when they abuse innocent’s! If i was living in Australia I would be there rallying for you! All the best to you!

    Hi Derryn
Just want to wish you all the best and hope that you are lucky enough to receive another chance of living life.
I have followed your career and listened to your shows and must say I love the way you present.
I live in Queensland now but everytime I go back to Melbourne, your Drive Show is on my radio.
I did meet you at a Grand Final Breakfast a fews years ago and must say it was a pleasure.
Good luck Derryn, to both you and your Wife.
I hope you both can have the opportunity to enjoy many years together. God bless.

    Hi Derryn,

    My name is Melanie.

You dont know me but you know my Mum Beryl and even more so my step dad Jeff Stephens. Jeff, like yourself has fought a long battle and played the waiting game on the liver transplant list, and was lucky enough to have received his gift on February 19 2011 at the Austin Hospital.

Jeff was in at the hospital the night you went in, and I have to say I was gutted for not only yourself but your family in hearing that plans could not proceed as hoped for.

Many people may not understand how your feelings of excitement could be overcome by a feeling of sadness….but i do. When Jeff received his phone call, I coudlnt help but feel overcome with sadness knowing that whilst I could very well be receiving the gift of having my dad back, that someone else could very well have just lost theres. Derryn, I think for you to have these feelings just shows
what a caring and much deserving person you are…

As a family member who has been through something so similar to what you are experiencing, i just wanted to let you know that I am, and will continue to wish you well as you continue your fight.

Please dont give up! No matter what, life is worth fighting for. Even though this time didnt work out, try not to be disheartened too deeply….there is still hope and you are so close.

I hope I will never have to experience what you, or Jeff, have experienced, and in your case continue to experience, however I do know what its like to be a family member of a loved one who is suffering through such a long and ongoing illness. Please let both Channel and the rest of your immediate family know that I am thinking of them also, and they are doing a great job….it can be tough some times.

Once again, please dont give up, everything happens for a reason and when it is your turn it will all be worth while…you can trust me on this.

I look forward to following your positive progress, both pre and post transplant.

    All my best wishes

    Melanie (25yrs)

Geeezz Derryn … You must be exhausted! I’m buggered and my heart is pumping faster than I know it should. Keep that bag packed! Haven’t had any radio on today so didn’t hear anything, though guess it was in the news. Well, I know it’s a long waiting list, but it must give you great hope. Good to know the docs and angels are thinking of you. And go go Chanel!

    Dear Derryn,
Best wishes on your procedure and recovery. I hope the tumors give up and go away forever. I also wish you success in finding a donor (mindful of the fact that every donation is from someone else’s loss).

Hurrah for your surgical team, Derryn. I am so, so, SO, glad they burned a hole in your liver! Sorry to say it like that, but if it gets rid of those bloody enemies then I am sure that hole will be loved, cherished and adored for the rest of your life.

You’re on the winning percentage. Keep reminding yourself of that and keep those pesky negative thoughts at bay.

Thinking of you throughout your journey…

    Dear Derryn

Good luck with May 3rd and hope all goes well. Last year my grandson had not one but 2 liver transplants within a fortnight. The first one rejected and that period in our lives was the darkest and I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.

Myself and my family can relate to what you are going through and all I can say is stay positive and have faith. Good luck for May 3rd.

As well as your Doctor’s advice and the medicines available, we should consider what we eat, drink, think and breath. Get plenty of rest as our body heals during our sleep. I believe that Cancer can not survive in an alkaline atmosphere, so keep away from acidic substances. Our water does not have enough minerals in it, so occasionally drink mineral water and soak your body in the ocean, and breath the air of the sea.
I was diagnosed in 1992 with primary breast cancer, in 2006 I was diagnosed with secondary Metastatic breast cancer. The statistics say if you get a secondary that comes back, it’s not a good prognosis. It’s five years later, I think the most important thing that I have done is never give up. Anonymous x

    Hi Derryn
I have just registered for organ donation through the link on your site.
I reckon if major websites such as news sites (SMH etc) put this link on their homepage it would help a lot.
All the best this year. I shall look forward to hearing news of your successful transplant when it comes. In the meantime I shall continue to enjoy and learn from your comments on Hinch.net.

Derryn I admire your opinionated approaches to – well just about everything… and the fact you win animal charity auctions by bidding $300 for cheap wine. For some reason when I got my license in 1990 I remember ticking “no” to be an organ donor. Stumbling across your blog tonight gave me the impetus to register and rectify that initial nonchalant ticking-of-the-box. The salvaged second hand bits will be no good to me anyway. All the best in your current battle(s). Mark

Hi Derryn, I sent you an email about a week ago and
I don’t know if you really understand what I had done.
They wouldn’t put me on the transplant list in Australia
as I was informed I was outside the guidelines. I didn’t
have a liver resection, My liver was completely removed
and they transplanted 2/3 rds of my daughters liver to me.
She is completely recovered back working and everything
Normal for her. I now have monthly blood tests and three
monthly ct scans. I play golf twice a week, travel overseas
regulary, and generally just get on with life with no restrictions.
As I said before 6mths ago I was all but dead and could do
Nothing. I hope you will contact me as I believe you have
More options than you have been given.
    Cheers

    Hi Derryn
I received my book today and was thrilled to see that it was signed by you. That’s a lovely bonus – thanks! I am suffering from a chronic, active, incurable medical condition at the moment and at age 44 feel like 100 years old. Ive found that every bugger has some advice for me. Eat this, drink that, read this. I know they mean well, but god am I sick of it. I’m full of chemo and yet well meaning friends want me to do aromatherapy. I’m rattling with pills and they think I should try acupuncture. Honestly, i wish they would save their breath. I hope you’re feeling better soon and that the doctors do the right thing by you. Good luck and all the best. Jayne

    Hi Derryn
Have you read the book by Sandra Cabot, Love Your Liver? Do you juice every morning? Do you have Apple Cider Vinegar Book (Miracle Health System) by P C Bragg N.D.,Ph.D.? There are lots of natural things you can do to help your liver. Look at alternative medicine eg. a good naturopath.
I have had many health issues, kidney removed, gall bladder and liver problems and having had a surgeon tell me ‘You’ll be back for the op’ (that was 5 yrs ago) I still have my gall bladder and liver and am now back on track, never felt better since my kidney op. in 2001. Never give up because miracles still happen and a change of lifestyle, eg eating, drinking, exercise/walking and alternative medicine could be the answer. Read the books if you have not read them and you can contact Sandra Cabot anytime.
Keep up the good fight for our children and best of luck. Thankyou for taking a stand.

    Hi Derryn,
Like most I am sorry to hear about your cancer & the fact that you need a liver transplant in order to survive, all the males on my side of the family died from cancer, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma over 4 years ago but was lucky in one way because I caught it early, I had a course of chemotherapy which put the lymphoma into remission, the down side was my Liver became diseased as it turned out I was carrying a HepB virus which I had no knowledge of, this was as a result of a blood transfusion from previous surgery.
I found out about the liver 7 weeks after I stopped Chemo, the doctor organised a blood test I was called into hospital the next day , on the following day a liver specialist came to see me & advised me I had 2 weeks to live, imagine the shock, he said I would go on the waitlist once a medical board approved it which they did a couple of days later, i was down to approx 12 days give or take a day or two, I was put at the top of the list for a transplant in Australasia because everything was shutting down, on the 9th day a liver was found, i was in Adelaide the liver came from sydney, when they were wheeling me to surgery I was drifting in & out of sleep & was later told I had less than 24 hours left in me.
I’m now living in Sydney close to the R.P.A. where my follow up visits occur, we had to sell our dream house in Adelaide because of mounting bills they never stop.
You of course do have some time to accept your situation, the trick is to come to terms with it , start living life with your partner, enjoy life embrace it have a holiday, your not on the planet just to work, this what keeps me going we do’nt earn a lot but we try to enjoy it , in the last 8 years I’ve had 2 Heart Attacks, Triple by pass surgery, Lymphoma, Liver Transplant, I have heart problems still & now I’m seeing a eurologist because of bladder problems, my brother died London in 2005 from stomach cancer, but right up to his death he kept a smile on his face. At his funeral I chose a song to be played, as his coffin passed through the curtain we played Monty Python ” Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”, I live by this rule always somebody is worse off, In closing Derry I really do wish you all the best mate I’m sure you’ll be fine,
    All The Best
    Bob

Please contact Dr Vagif Soultanov, Chairman of Solagran Limited in St Kilda Road, Melbourne. They have an extract from Siberian Green Conifer Needles. It is a polyprenol substance that rebuild the entire liver(usually in 3 months – but longer in extreme cases).
The cost of a 90 day course is only $600. This is a public company listed on the ASX. You know my father, i believe – he used to own Penrith on Mt Macedon.
    Phone 9820 2699 Solagran Ltd
Dr Soultanov also runs a clinic in Sth Melbourne 9682 7600.

I have been followngyour career since i was a child when my father watched your television sho religiously. I listen to you radio program whenever possible and find it extremely interesting and informative I have always admired you for standing up for your beliefs and fighting for the rights of victims against peadophiles. If only there were more Derryn Hinch’s in the world the system might change. The loss in court yesterda was a st back, but you have bought the issue to the table and this gives u hope of change. If a society cant protect its vunerable, we all fail.
I am devastated by your ill health and hope, like you, that you are lucky enough to find a donor. You deserve much good Karma and I am sure it will come to you. Stay positive, the human spirit creates miracles every day.

    Derryn:
I just had a liver transplant 14 months ago. Prior to the transplant I was diagnosed with a terminal incurable non treatable disease. They gave me three months to live. I sold everything i had and borrowed everything I could, then travelled the world looking for my own cure. I new the longer I could stay alive the better chance I would have at getting a liver in the future. I mean if they were doing voo doo somewhere i showed up. ong story shot i lasted 3 years and 8 months and my liver quit and I was lucky enough to get a transplant. Post transplant I have had an unexplainable amazing recovery. I also found post transplant a great immune system booster that I wish I had had pre transplant. Maybe it could help your situation, maybe not….but having been where you are now I was willing to try anything. If it’s something you want to chat about drop me a line howard@howarddell.com

If you have a death sentence from medical orthodoxy then why don’t you try alternative therapy. I have two friends who beat cancer that way. One man is 85 and you can talk to him tomorrow if you reply. Alternative therapists will be loath to take you on because you are high profile, but Ian Gawler in Victoria has run a cancer clinic now for many years with great success. He has been on TV with his program.I have lived alternative since I was 26 and I go to see a doctor when I need it to retain my licence and that is all, best wishes, Keith.

You seem to be a lucky man Derryn …

I was diagnosed with mixed Cholangiocarcinoma (cholangio + hepatocellular carcinoma) 3 years ago – a one in 10 yrs case … surgery was not possible due to the invasive nature of the tumour (it was in the bilary system and had invaded 2/3 of my liver tissue) and was told from the word go, that despite my excellent health and age (I was 39) I would not be considered for a transplant.

I have no secondary cancers, no history of liver disease (hepatitus or cirrhosis) of any form … and yet, I don’t make the transplant list!

My surgeon is the head of the Qld Liver Transplant Unit – the leading Unit in Australia and amongst the best in his field in the world. My oncologist also leads his field.

I have undertaken weekly chemotherapies since April 2008, utilizing a variety of drug therapies. Initial therapies involving a 9 months f/n treatment using Avastin ($1800 per f/n – non PBS) brought about an unexpected reduction in the tumour, allowing me to undertake had the most aggressive and comprehensive liver resection EVER undertaken in Australia. I spent near 6 months in hospital recovering and have maintained weekly and fortnightly chemotherapies since my release, one costing $600 per 20mls – and it wasn’t on the PBS either!

And yet … I still don’t make it on to the Transplant List.

… you must be a very, very lucky man.

Hi Derryn, Sorry to read that you time may be running short. Being a Weaver I alaway wondered if Jacki was a distant cousin. About twenty years ago I sent you by snailmail a copy of unidentified pic of a kid who lokked like her in some very old family photos. You replied that you thought there was a likeness, but Jacki didn’t. Sorry to say that we never did solve the mystery, but we’ve always regarded both of you with a sort of fondness when you’ve been in the news. Kind wishes, Paul Weaver.

    Dear Derryn,
    You could try taking 50grams of Vitamin A, C and E everyday…
I’ve heard that is the protocol Dr Atkins used to treat cancer patients…
Also I’ve heard that chemotherapy is only effective on 6 types of cancer… But I don’t remember which…
Oh and stay away from refined sugar.
Cancerous cells feed off the fermentation of sugar.
And you may also want to avoid foods unsuitable for your blood type…

Hi Derryn, I was in a similar position to
yourself 12 months ago. Unlike you, they
wouldn’t put me on the transplant list as I
was advised I was outside the guidelines.
I probably would have just accepted this &
would certainly have died many months ago.
I was very lucky that I have a loving & very
generous daughter & wife. They didn’t accept
the death sentence & my daughter arranged for
a live liver transplant in Hong Kong with her as
the donor. That was 6 months ago & everything

Hi, mate my missus had some lesions in her liver some years back when we were living in Argentina. To make a long story short(and its a long story!) we were put in touch with a group of German doctors who had been trialling a technology called Laser Induced Thermo Therapy(LITT), basically they guide a bit of fibre optic into the tumour and then give it a blast with the laser and “cook” the thing, the body then breaks down the “cooked” bit and all is good.
My wife had 7 tumours zapped and is now 100%.
The procedure was done in Frankfurt and was not cheap(but who cares!) At the time we had contact with many Australia doctors who canned the technology and wanted to operate, the LITT procedure had her in and out in a day.
Dr Vogl and his team were pretty cool and know their stuff.

I have no affiliation or any other sinister reasons to send this info it is purely to give you some info which may or may not help you(it did for us)

    Good luck with it.

Firstly, I’d like to join the long queue wishing you good health (don’t need to wish you happiness – it seems you are finding that for yourself).

I am writing to say thanks for your referral to Edenvale Wines. We are having an inaugural conference for our Knit4Charities group in beautiful Woolgoolga NSW on the first weekend in June this year, and we wanted to serve ONE glass of champagne to each attendee on arrival to celebrate the event! Well, with current RSA laws (and I checked and double-checked with them personally) we aren’t allowed to just serve this wine – we’d have to do the RSA course etc etc. Personally my thinking is HOW MUCH MORE RESPONSIBLE CAN YOU BE THAN SERVE JUST ONE GLASS PER PERSON – WITH A MEAL TO FOLLOW??????

Anyway, we were looking for an alternative and I stumbled on your blog/webpage/whatever (sorry I’m not clear on the terminology). I have partaken of non-alcoholic wines before (many years ago when I was pregnant) and didn’t like the overly sweet taste of all the ones I had tried. But I have bought a bottle of the Edenvale sparkling to trial and will now be happy to serve that to our members on arrival – we can celebrate legally and safely.

Many thanks for the “heads up” on this.

    Kerry

    Hi Derryn,

I have been praying for you Derryn and truely you should seek Jesus for healing He can heal you there are thousands of testimonies to back this up. God can do all things that we can not do for ourselves. I use to be an alcoholic, Jesus opened my eyes, and I thank Him everyday as my life has gone from strength to strength because Jesus is in my life. Jesus showed me how much my brain really did need washing.

Jesus died to give us life if you have a read of the New Testament you will read what Jesus did for us, He truely is the living God. Have a read of Kenneth Hagin books great man, he was saved from death he was told he only had a few months to live having many thing wrong with him, over time he was healed from everything, once he seeked Jesus.

Rhema Church in Ringwood has a healing class every Wednesday at 11am, and Pastor Eileen has her own testimony of healing she would share with you.

I actually encourage everyone and to the man Clancy please dont be alone I am sorry for your loss, you have many friends come and meet us all at Rhema Family Church.

God Bless you Derryn and to everyone.
    Your friend Tash.

I just saw your interview with Tracey Grimshaw ACA and think you look VERY healthy. The last time I saw a photo of you you looked very thin and very sick.
What a remarkable turnaround! How did you get such great form back? Was it because you stopped drinking?
I wish you the very best with your recovery and think you are someone that we all aspire to be. Someone not afraid to meet a challenge and someone not afraid to speak the truth. Best of luck with your journey.
    regards
    Kerri Fraser

    Derryn

I wrote to you a while ago telling you about Madeleine (my wife) who has been battling breast, ovarian and secondary breast cancer for five years. She lost the battle on the 11 Feb 2011.

There is now a big void in my life as we did everything together since our marriage 34 years ago. Her last six months have been hell and she had by then already suffered too much. In particular, her last two weeks when the body shut down and she lost a hell of a lot of weight. Whilst I am grieving her loss, I am also happy that she is not suffering any more.

I am really appreciative of Assoc Prof Ian Haines, the nursing staff at Cabrini (Malvern). These people give hope, give people an extra lease of life and in some case beat that dreadful disease that cancer is.

I keep thinking about you and hope that you progress well and beat that horrible disease.

When one is touched by such a disease, one’s life priorities and outlook on life undergo a radical change that people untouched by this or similar diseases / circumstances would understand.

All the very best Derryn and I will be keeping a close eye on your progress and may I wish you the best of luck.

    Cheers
    Clancy

    Dear Derryn,

I dont know you very well but I know one thing and that the love of God is flowing towards you right now. There is a man by the name of Andrew Wommack and he teaches the truth about Jesus Christ who died on the cross so that we can be saved and by his stripes we were healed. Not only did Jesus died for the sins of the world he also provided healing to our bodies.
Being a journalist you must know that words are powerful. In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. Please Derryn God wants you well take that chance to believe in the truth and the truth shall set you free. There are many testimonies of people being healed of cancer of all sorts of diseases and sickness. I pray you will watch the healing testimonies section which is well documented and listen to the truth so that you may receive your healing. I pray that God will open your heart and mind to know that he is real and he is the truth and that most importantly he wants you well.

    Loving Kindness Kim

    Dear Derryn,

I hope that you will receive a new liver soon and that all will go well with the transplant. I wish a transplant had been an option for my 37 year old son who has just lost his battle with primary liver cancer. He was diagnosed 18 months ago with a rare form of bilary duct cancer which had already spread to his lungs. He underwent chemotherapy, SIR spheres and even monoclonal antibody treatment to try and extend his life. Sadly, he died in Dec 2010 and left his wife and 7 week old son. He was a non-smoker and only occasionally drank a glass of wine so it is hard for us to accept his outcome. I wish you success with the transplant and many more years ahead to enjoy.

    Hi Derryn
Last Nov I was on my way to the States, and a friend gave me ‘That’s Life’ to read in the quiet moments. I carried that book all the way and back to Gold Coast without touching it. 6 days after arriving home I was bored and picked the book up, I didn’t put it down until I was half way. I have NEVER read a book of any sort in my entire life. I was so fascinated with the reading. I related to your early days in NZ being a KIWI myself born in 1950. I have finished the book needless to say and I would just like to wish you all the best. I wish there were more authentic people on this earth. If you ever feel like a glass of wine with a mere mortal in QLD, email me. All the best. Denis Cotterill

    Hi Derryn,

I have finally moved back to NP. Sandy told me about your battle, so sorry to hear. Mum had “it” in the liver at the end, although she had already survived 17 years with various forms, and that was years ago. I know you are a rip snortin’ fighter, as you have shown over the years for various people and causes, now comes the toughest one of all, fighting for self. Good luck and keep fighting, my thoughts are with you and your family.

    Hi Derryn!
Good on you for making your health problem “Public”.
It is via celebrities such as yourself, that Cancer Awareness is becoming vigilant. More awarness! More chance of cure. My husband died of cancer in April 2010. I rode the journey with him until the end. I wish you all the luck n the world for your future health. After viewing the organ donor link on this site, it gave me the reminder to register, which I have just done on line.

    Dear Darren,
Hang in there Darren.Fresh Brocolli & all green vegetables & fruits have antioxidants that enable your immune system to fight a victorious battle to overcome cancer. You can win but there must be an extra focus on eating all these healthy foods that aid your immune system to get strong.Chemotherapy invariably depresses the immune system so you need to get strong again quickly.Drink plenty of natural fruit Juices as well.Whilst I am a pharmacologist by training & I am very much aware of controlled clinical trial data ,I defintely know 100% that fresh fruit, antioxidants will aid your recovery. Also pop into a Christian Healing Service at a Christian Life Centre or a Christian Outreach Centre to have more people praying for your recovery.
I hope you are with us for many years longer & I would love to see you make 100 years of age as you have done many good things for humanity by exposing pedophiles ,etc.Keep up the good work.Thinking of you.
    Good Luck,

    Hi Derryn.

I’m 35 and have liver cancer too. Mine spread from my bowel before it was discovered. I have recently had a treatment called Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIR for short) at St. Vincents hospital in Sydney. In one month my cancer markers have decreased by 65%. I’d recommend you investigate it if you haven’t already. If you’d like to chat about it, please feel free to drop me a line.

    Hi Derryn,

Thank you for having the courage to share your very personal journey with us! I wish you nothing but the best, and am so pleased that your results are looking good.

It is so important to register as an organ donor, and though crippled by interminable sadness, families can know they will help another family in their time of need. Unfortunately, many feel too upset to make this life-changing decision, but they should discuss this serious topic during the good times, and always be prepared. So very important!

I was both delighted and proud to see you at Variety’s last bicycle presentation on the 15th. The amazing job you do in helping disadvantaged kids is so admirable. I’m one of Variety’s volunteers, and the support you give them is tremendous.

Life has sent you an enormous challenge, Derryn, but I know you can and will surmount it with the help of your family, friends, medical team, and supporters.

Very best wishes, and kind thoughts.

    Rhonda.

    Hi Derryn,
My wife and I have been involved in alternative organic farming and in promoting healthy life styles for many years. In two years since coming to the farm from the Melbourne, my weight has reduced substantially, my over all health has improved and many ailments have now disappeared, especially in the last 6 months since taking Bovine Colostrum to improve my adult stem cell production many times over. This NZ nutritional product, which we sell and promote, has a track record of outstanding results for many conditions too numerous to cover here.
You would do well to look seriously into the claims of the NZ company New Image and commence taking colostrum at your earliest opportunity. We don’t need your business but we do want to see you well with your health fully restored.
I don’t always agree with what you have have to say on various issues but I do believe that your voice is needful to keep people in power honest. I want to continue to hear that voice load and clear.

    Seasons Greetings,

    Trevor

    Hi Derryn,

Thank-you so much for sharing your story. My family and I are currently on a similar, but different, journey.

My dad has end stage liver failure, and we have been told he has less than twelve months to live without a donor. So he’s currently undergoing similar tests that you’ve recently been through to get him on ‘the list’.

It’s been really helpful for my family and I to read your blog, as it has allowed us to understand some of the process beforehand. And most importantly, it’s helped Dad realise he’s not alone in all this. That there are people like yourself, who are also facing this major challenge.

I also have to agree with you about how wonderful the staff at the Liver Transplant Unit at the Austin are. We have been repeatedly amazed and impressed. Dad says he’s seen you in the waiting room once. Maybe next time he’ll say ‘hi’.

Thank-you once again for sharing this. You may not realise it, but it does help so many.

Best of luck with your journey.

    xx

Hi Derryn, I have been listening to you for so long, it is quite funny, my husband introduced you to me (Via radio) 20 years ago. He was an avid listener to you then, but now thinks I am crazy because I listen to you every afternoon. (he has since tuned into SEN Sports) poor thing.
The reason I am contacting you is in the hope you can steer me in the right direction, like you my husband has diagonised with (terminal cancer) in the last month I have seen my husband from being a fit 55 year old (who had a cardiac strees test 8 months ago, where the doctor said “please stop, you are making me tired” any way history is history, My main aim in contacting you is in the hope I can be put into contact with Ron Barrassi, the reason for this request is that Mr Barrassi made a huge inpact in John’s life, he went from being a St Kilda supporter (in 1966 I think)to sitting Mr Barrassi knee and has since been a Melbourne Supporter. I would like for his last Christmas to have Mr Barrassi sign a purchased book to John, i can deliver and pick up the book, I understand if this can not be organised before christmas, at least I have hope for next year. hope your feeling well and good luck Derryn, We are putting our names on the registry.

    Hi Derryn,
Would be keen to have the Zaidee website on your important links as well. People can also make a donation for us to spread the message about organ and tissue donation nationally as we have now done for the past 6 years via Zaidee’s Story – it will be 6 years this Thursday when our daughter suddenly died from a burst blood vessel in her brain at the age of 7 years and 22 days and donated her organ and tissue at the Royal Children’s in Melbourne. Zaidee was the only child to be an organ and tissue donor in 2004 in Victoira under the age of 16 years – Our mission statement is “Everyone that needs an organ or tissue transplant should gets one.”

    Dear Derryn,

Again I wish you all the very best, for the life of me I can not understand those who go to the trouble of writing such nasty comments their lives must be so empty, to me all that demonstrates is totat ignorance I can’t lower my self to bother saying nasty things about them. I admire ur control of mind not to react & snap at these sad creatures, more importantly I was so happy to hear u made the doner list humbled as u r feeling I know there are millions of people deserving of this doner gift but if u can look at it from this point if ever u question ur worthiness of this just see it as a small gift back for the tireless work u have done for countless people who don’t have a voice the likes of children, women especially. A 50 yr career the blowes u have copped the dignity u display I can’t think of a more worthy recepient than ur self.
Best wishes to u & ur wife always

Derryn,I have had you on my mind and in my prayers. I am willing to volunteer to be a live donor. I know that it has been done before. I would not want it on my conscience to do nothing when it may be possible I can do something, and maybe save a life in taking action.

I do not know, of course, if I am a compatible match. If it should turn out that I am and you choose to take me up on my offer, I would need help with medical expenses because I am a pensioner. Other than that, my offer comes with no strings attached.

My thoughts are with you. It is sad to know that Spain has 3 (ie 300%) times the level of transplants per million people as we do – but there is resistance at government levels to apply the lessons. Spain’s success is not about the medicine but about donor logistics.
If we did this – there would be up to 1,000 more lives saved or made better each year.
Fingers crossed for the waiting list. PK

I learned about your blog today and just finished reading the entire thing this morning.

I hope neither you or Chanel are discouraged by any negative feedback received.. it sounds like you’re both champions in your own right. And thank you for championing a bunch of very worthy causes. To win your battle privately as the lawyer suggested you do.. would be your choice and your right, but also far more insular.

I hope you tick more of those road-to-wellness boxes & yes, I prayed for you.

Dear Derryn, I am sending via mail to 3AW information on a herbal tea that saved my son’s life after having been diagnosed with tumours on his liver as a result of Hep C contracted during several blood transfusions when he had leukemia. He couldn’t have a transplant due to low platelettes, so I tried the tea out of desparation and it was sucessful in stopping the growth of the tumours. Your problem may be different, I don’t know – but it’s worth reading the literature.

    Dear Derryn,

Lots of love and best wishes for your treatment and recovery :)
I lost my husband a few weeks ago with Pancreatic cancer. Greg died 12 months to the day he was diagnosed. I only wish surgery or a transplant could have been an option for him. But I had 30 years of wonderful with Greg and was privileged enough to be able to take 12 months off work to care for him. There is hope for you Derryn and be sure, myself and our four daughters are praying for you.
Take time to rest and make sure your wife takes care of herself too as being a carer is exhausting as well, this mixed with the pain of seeing someone you love struggling with treatment will be a great strain on her.

    Hi Derryn,
I would not completely overlook dietary influences in fighting your disease. Having done some extensive research on diet and cancer, I reached the conclusion that although, as you say, cancer cannot be cured by “asparagus” (infusions maybe lol)I have found that it is certainly beneficial to maintain your body in the best possible condition to fight the disease. Dr.Shervan Schrieber’s book Anti-Cancer is the most sensible I have read regarding diet and holding cancer at bay.
I have been on chemo since early in the year and on-going treatment is probably the go for me, but I get on with life as usual (appreciate it a lot more), have very few side effects and every day is a bloody winner.
Keep a positive attitude, don’t concentrate on the stats and remember there are lots of us out there fightng this battle.
    Cheers, Shirley (OVC, stage 3c)

I hope you recover from your condition fully.
Far less importantly, I would be pleased to hear no more about your health issues.
Countless anonymous people are suffering ailments worldwide.
The fact that you are well known doesn’t render your health more important than theirs, yet unfortunately, it does render it more interesting to the proletariat.
The constant public airing of your ill health is indulgent, tiresome and somewhat undignified.
If other media outlets wish to cover it, that is their prerogative.
You would do yourself a good turn by hopefully recovering privately and working publicly.
Good luck in your pursuit of good health and dignity.

The Breuss Cancer Cure (book Hilde Hemmes)

According to Breuss, protein was primarily responsible for nurturing cancer, regardless of the type or where it was in the body. His prescribed solution was to fast for 42 days to starve the cancer of protein. Throughout the fast, a juice cocktail made from organically-grown beetroot, carrot, Chinese radish, celeriac and potato was taken, to detoxify and cleanse the body, and to stimulate the patient’s disease-fighting capabilities. Herbal Tea were also an essential part of Breuss’ treatment program, with a range of blends designed to target specific illnesses.
The results were staggering. Throughout his career Breuss received over 45,000 testimonials from people who had been cured of cancer, leukaemia and many other seemingly incurable diseases, through the Total Cancer Treatment.

Hello Derryn. I’m a psychotherapist with 25 years clinical experience in researching, documenting, publishing and treating the psychological triggers to a large range of physical and mental health conditions, plus published three books on this science. I have also been invited to speak at the world congress on neurotalk in China. Many people understand that stress influences our health, but few are aware that when it comes to your particular health condition, there is a specifc psychological trigger that requires adressing before the condition can reverse. I can provide you with an accurate account of the psychological factor involved, along with the lesson to cancel the issue. The most difficult aspect of your condition is finding a means by which to reach you and share the information with you. Please do not dismiss this email.

    Dear Mr Hinch
I saw you on 60 minutes last night, I lost my husband to Liver cancer in June this year, he was not a drinker he contracted Hep c in the early 80′s due blood transfusions he needed for an auto immune disease called Good Pastures Syndrome.

He sadly did not have the choices you have, I sincerly hope you do get a liver. I just wanted to tell you that we decided to take one day at a time and deal with the troubles or the triumphs of that day and never worry about the tomorrow my husband too was given twelve months he survived 18, When ever we were feeling down all we had to do was look around us and there was always somebody worse off than us. We were only disability pensioners, I am coping with my own problems but life is wonderful how ever bad things are.

I wish you, your wife, and extended family all the luck in the world.

    God Bless
    Anne

    Dear Derryn
Have been reading your blogs and listening to you and hearing about your battle with liver cancer. Very touched and very sad at the same time. My mother in law also has liver cancer that is a secondary cancer and she is not as fortunate as you to be in a country like Australia. Unfortunately, she has to fight her battle alone, overseas!
Hearing about the medical support you are getting makes me feel really glad that I’ve decided to move to Australia…
I wish you all the best. The journey is long and hard, but it is worth it…

Ive met you several times when you where at 3ak and your lunches,I had the pregnant wife shes not pregnant now but I still have her .Our little boy is now 7 ,so thats 8 years ago.

Anyway Derryn we all hope that you can beat this but as I found out with Mum the cards are dealt and we have to deal with what we have all as you always say “that’s life”. We hope and pray that yours continues.

    Hi Derryn,
If I were in your position I would do what ever was possible to prolong my life.Forget about ethics or laws.
    You have only one life.
A partial liver transplant will work and it can be done anywhere in the world with a live non-related donor.
The only way organ donation will increase in Aus is to put a price on it.
If you have to pay for sperm or artificial insemination what’s the difference if it’s for an organ.
If it’s made partially legal then it can be controlled and at least operations can be done by professionals in sanitry conditions as apposed to the other black market stuff.

    Derryl,
We don’t know eachother but we’ve one thing in common. That liver. I got a new one in feb only a few weeks short of saying: ‘goodbye cruel world’. It’s hard to hear that the only way is a transplant. It takes time to come to terms with, no matter what smoke curtain you apply. you still have some timecredits, but as you already may know there’s a big shortage of donors. I’d like to share my stories before and after transplant, if it helps whoever it may be. But you’re in a bit of an unique situation since you can talk and therefore influence to people ‘on airt’. I would like to encourage you to be an strong, outspoken (no problem with that, hopefully)advocate for transplant and donorship. People like you can make a bit of a difference even if you would be able to find one extra donor. Might be good for your mental and emotional wellbeing as well. be prepared that your life will change from now on, change more than you can imagine, no matter what happens. I’m well informed about the situation and having been through the whole process recently and as said, if there’s anything I can do, feel free to contact me.
    Cheers

    Hi Derryn,

Have you tried drinking alkaline water? It is known to be beneficial to human health and marketed with claims that it is an antioxidant which can slow aging and prevent disease.

There is nothing to loose right. Give it a go Derryn.
If you can’t find any source in your area contact me because I have an ionizer and I can give it to you.

here is wishing that you be well!

I have listened to you for years – you have become a part of my life, I think! Your cancer fight has affected me – I am so sad for you – but I know you’ll fight as you can. You are a hero to many people who have been abused or marred by other challenges in life – and if everyone’s good wishes could cure your cancer, you would be healed within minutes.

There are a lot of us out here thinking of you and hoping your mother ship is defeated by your chemo bead aliens and your pure will! Lean on us through these times – radio, your blog, your articles – and we’ll be there to add to your strength and fighting spirit on those days when your spirit seems to have gone on a little vacation…

    Fight on…

This news shocks me me but on another level – don’t believe them anyway.

We are streets apart politically (now, where did that cliche come from) however your fight to protect nowhere men and their families (like me), from real danger is appreciated. I’m in the same boat unfortunately. Life is a long song (J Tull) and who knows what will turn up next. May be a 60 y.o. leftist but get where your ethics are coming from.

Remember – you turned the old Sydney Sun (killed the Mirror!)) into a worthwhile arvo paper – before the vultures and the vampires got at it (shows my age – I always bought it at Sydney Town Hall on my way home).

I do admire you (let’s face it – I may be next – might already be – life can’t go on for ever – now that would be a nightmare),I can on only hope- Oz really, really needs people like you – this doesn’t turn into a media circus but I fear. Just keep the beat going (on and on).

See ya’ in 20 years time! As above bloggers – no Doctor has a right to put a time on anything – I do work in the health field and anyone who says “bla….12″ months” is not a Doctor in my definition.

My best wishes and “love” as we both face the wonders of aging and just working too much… You have done wonders (now what was the name of that columnist you had on on the Sun in the 80′s – she really ignited things – I suppose Google will assist – was lie the infamous G Greer from memory but that’s shot as well).

You have given more to the world than I have – keep stuffing the mongrels up. We can live our lives as we want. Sometimes this joint aint worth the paying price anyway. No tears on my departure, but there will be on yours.

    Hi Derryn,

After hearing your talk last nite on the TV about your liver cancer I felt really concerned for you and would like to share an experience of mine with you. This happened since July this year. This is to do with a woman in our Cook Islands community who had cancer and was told by her doctors that she only had two months to live. My wife an I introduced her to a health product and now she is still alive. I am not saying that we will not die but if there is something that might prolong our lives what is there to loose. I would like to introduce this product to you. It is called OPC3, Antioxidant, and Pomegranate with Pomella. They are all Isotonix in the making meaning they come in powder form and you mix with water which give the same pressure with our body and then drink. They are manufactured here in Australia. One of the ways to get this product is through my Portal on the NET. You can sign in and check these products and if you would like order them for yourself and try them. I guarentee you it works. My family take these products for our supplements and we have seen the effect upon our health. If you do not mind you can go into our Portal and sign in: http://www.marketaustralia.com/buxaver. I know these products work.

My name is Iotia from the Cook Islands and are now living here in Melbourne for nearly twenty years. I am also a pastor in our small Church called Cook Islands Presbyterian Fellowship Inc which worship in the Monash Uniting Church Hall about three hundred meters from the corner of Pricess High Way and Clayton Road, Melbourne. Praying for your recovery. If you need more information pleas email me

Derryn, sorry to hear about anyone with cancer these days, having endured this disease for 11 years. I read that you need a liver transplant to survive 12 months. This to me, is grandstanding and a load of cockandbull. Let me tell you why.

One, coming public with this at a time where you face a possible prison term is perhaps going to play on the minds of those sentencing you should you lose in court and you may well be hoping to escape some jail time by doing so.

Two, I have had liver cancer for 11 years, yes, they gave me the same diagnosis, terminal, 3-4 years life expectancy, no chance of living a meaningful life. I was 36 when diagnosed. The difference between us is they told me that a transplant is not an option for me as, quite simply, they wouldn’t waste a good liver on anyone with cancer. Can you tell me why you are so special to be considered for this and not me?

Three, your comments regarding your own situation are filled with self pity and the need for sympathy. Someone of your profile and position in the media, should be doing something different. You should be grandstanding for those of us that are never heard, seeking funding for a cure and giving others hope! Show some fighting spirit and forget the psychology crap, a truly positive mind will always win through.

My challenge to you is to get on with it and use this as an issue, not for self interest. Look at me for a few seconds, diagnosed at 36, given a life expectancy of 3-4 years maximum, had my first child at age 40, married at 41, now 47 and eleven years into the illness and going strong. A positive attitude and a will to live is all you need to survive and…..good doctoring.

Take a few minutes to look up Carcinoid Syndrome and how debilitating it can be and you have my life. I’ve survived a heart attack 5 years ago and have 2 stents, a liver resection 7 years ago and no chemotherapy or radiation treatment in 11 years, suffer from diabetes type 2, but with 3 major illnesses, I’m happy as Larry.

I was working for Centrelink, helping people that were worse off than me “socially and economically?” and have had to retire 2 years ago against my will.
I wish I was still able to do this, as I loved doing it and it has been taken away from me. I used to be in hospital regularly (quarterly to put a figure on it) for pain management, usually a week at a time, since retiring I have not spent one single night there, yet my family deeply criticised me for giving my income source away. That is one issue that we have to deal with as we get sick and suffer.

One thing that irks me is that public profile people who get an illness makes major news, yet it’s the little bloke sitting at home suffering doesn’t get a look in. Use your illness to promote well-being and regular doctors visits, because without it, I’d be a dead man.

Many people, men in particular, have this thing about Doctor avoidance. It is really quite sad that men refuse to go to the Doctor’s when they are unwell, and it is usually all too late when they do build up the nerve to do so. We have to change this somehow. I’d hope that you could perhaps raise this issue to your listeners and beyond. It could make a difference!!

I still enjoy a hefty drink most weekends and stick to Lambrusco, plenty of anti-oxidants and no hangovers. I used to be a heavy beer drinker and now can only manage two and the taste buds are in protest. Give it a try. A Doctor the other day mentioned to me that beetroot and broccoli juices are great for the liver, I’m not game yet, but may give it a whirl down the track.

I hope that you can change your mindset, think positive and strive beyond 12 months regardless of what the Doctors say. Set some short and long term goals, mine is now to make 50 years of age. The next is to see my children graduate and become fine citizens.

I live in Queensland so don’t get your show, but I hoep you raise some awareness about this tragic disease and get these men off to the Doctors before it’s too late as there are far too many dead heroes out there…husbands, partners, grandparents and sadly parents.

All the best with yoru personal fight. I’m still taken aback that they would even consider a transplant given what I was told.

One more thing, it makes me sick to the guts to see these Liberal politicians saying NO to Health reform in this country, they should be ashamed of themselves.

    regards,

    Rich Johnston

    Hi Derryn!

Many years ago I used to often see you in Toorak Village, and your unfailing courtesy and pleasant demeanour impressed me greatly and has never been forgotten. You struck me as being a real gentleman and a genuinely nice human being.

I’ve always admired your marvellous down-to-earth, real way of looking at things – telling it how it is – and I love that! And that’s how you’re walking your path now, and that’s just what I would expect of you, a man whose entire life and being is about truth.

Just want to let you know that my thoughts are with you and I’m wishing you all the best.

I am a 54 woman who had cirrhosis diagnosed 5 years ago following a variceal bleed. Every time I go for a liver ultrasound I am waiting for the other shoe to drop in the form of a cancer diagnosis. I have been dry for five years and was a bottle a day whisky drinker. I really hope that Derryn raises the awareness of organ donation. What does it take to have the “opt out” option … you are a donor UNLESS you say you don;t wish to be. Other countries do this. Why aren’t we?
I hope Derryn can make a difference …
All the best with your battles. Cheers Pauline

Derryn, I wish you all the best with both the fights you’re facing at the moment.
I wonder if you’ve come across any of the information out there on dietary causes and cures for cancer, like “The China Study” by Dr. T Colin Campbell or on a more personal level, “Living Proof: A Medical Mutiny,” by Michael Gearin-Tosh?

Having watched my mother pass away from multiple forms, I’ve been fascinated reading and researching the raw food movement, and there’s some amazing case studies of cancer remission and reversals in that community. The China Study, in particular, reminds me of your approach to trying to get information out that the big names/organisations want to keep quiet.
When I read of your battle I felt I had to let you know although, of course, in the end it’s entirely your decision, battle & life. I wish you all the best with it.

    Regards,
    Crystal

    SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine)’

Have you heard of the above supplement? It is proven to be good for repairing the liver, even liver cancer, and might keep you going a bit longer if you don’t get a transplant right away. They come in a range of qualities. I get mine from lef.org (USA). They have a Fiji outlet that gets stuff to Australia in a very short time. Good luck

    Hi Derryn,
Congratulations on your awards. They’re well deserved.

I was very sad when I learned of your battle with liver cancer. You are facing a hard road ahead, of that there is no doubt, but you’ve faced, fought and won difficult battles before. You will do it again.

Always remember you have so many on your side, and always remain your positive self, even when, at times, it’s hard to do so.

    Best thoughts and wishes, Derryn.

So sorry you are having to go through this crap. I too am going through chemo at the moment for breast cancer and it’s knocking me for 6. But it’s DOABLE. So I’m told. The fatigue is immense. I wish you all the luck and good results possible. Cancer sucks! You are a fighter.

Derryn, all the best with your fight against cancer. I hope you beat the proverbial out of it – you and everybody who is besieged by this insidious illness. Wouldn’t it be great if countries spent a little more on the medical research to look after their people and a little less money on shiny new ways to beat up on their neighbours? Nil Carborundum! Dan.
